Women's Health!

Women's Health (Pelvic Floor) Physiotherapy is a non-surgical option for many issues arising from pregnancy and other gynecological matters.

Common complaints treated by a certified women's health physiotherapist include, but are not limited to, incontinence, over active bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction and post-partum related problems (ie diastasis rectus abdominus). Therapists are also trained in treating men for similar concerns including pelvic pain and post prostatectomy incontinence.

WHPT Treatment is evidence-based and completed by a specifically trained therapist experienced in treating and discussing these sensitive topics. Clients are assessed and treated in a private room and, as always, all information is kept confidential. Assessment and treatment involves an in depth history taking as well as visual and/or internal exam. Therapists at Dale Charles/Sports Clinic Physiotherapy are also trained extensively in Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI) Rehabilitation where a Real-time ultrasound machine is used to look at how certain pelvic and abdominal muscles are functioning. This is useful machine particularly for client biofeedback when learning how to properly contract these muscles.

WH Physiotherapy is holistic in nature and more than 'just Kegels'. While 'Kegels' (or pelvic floor muscle contractions) are important for strength building, research shows that most people do these contractions incorrectly and written or verbal descriptions of how to do them are not enough. It is also not enough to simply strengthen the pelvic floor. Power, endurance, speed and timing are all imperative training considerations as well as ensuring proper co-contraction/relaxation with the abdominals, diaphragm and other muscles of the pelvic and abdomen. When done correctly, abdominal and pelvic floor retraining alone can cure incontinence 70-80% of the time.

WH Physiotherapy is a form of treatment that helps during all stages of life, but like most things the earlier a problem is diagnosed the better the outcome can be. The goal of WH physiotherapy is to empower clients to take control of their problem to give them back the freedom from their symptoms and quality of life they deserve.
